The core loop is buildable, but a dependable replacement becomes a real weekend or multi-day project. For Zight, capture screen, GIF, or screenshot and create a shareable hosted link. The hard boundary is cloud storage, link management, viewer analytics, integrations, and team libraries, plus capture polish, hosting, and collaboration.

# Zight indie build

## Goal

Build the smallest trustworthy replacement for the core Zight workflow for one developer or a tiny team.

## Scope

Capture a screen recording, GIF, or screenshot with optional microphone audio, trim and annotate the result, and export a local file or create a shareable hosted link.

## Quick start

1. Install the documented dependencies.
2. Copy `.env.example` to `.env`.
3. Run the development command chosen during implementation.
4. Complete the acceptance checks in `BUILD_PLAN.md`.

## Honest limits

This build deliberately does not replace:
- cloud storage, link management, viewer analytics, integrations, and team libraries
- instant hosted sharing
- viewer analytics
- team libraries
- cross-device capture

If those capabilities are essential, use Cap instead of pretending the gap is solved.

why people still pay

People still pay for Zight because the recording itself is easy; the subscription removes upload, transcoding, sharing, organization, and support work. The recurring cost buys OS permissions, codecs, rendering performance, uploads, storage, links, and viewer analytics, not just the visible interface.
