A consolation build is possible, but the paid product's decisive value sits outside a solo rebuild. For Zendesk, operate a small email and web support inbox with tickets and an audit trail. The hard boundary is omnichannel routing, marketplace, workforce tools, reporting, compliance, and support, plus channel integrations and support operations.

# Zendesk indie build

## Goal

Build the smallest trustworthy replacement for the core Zendesk workflow for one developer or a tiny team.

## Scope

Receive customer email and web messages, route them into a shared ticket inbox, reply from one place, and retain a searchable conversation history with an audit trail.

## Quick start

1. Install the documented dependencies.
2. Copy `.env.example` to `.env`.
3. Run the development command chosen during implementation.
4. Complete the acceptance checks in `BUILD_PLAN.md`.

## Honest limits

This build deliberately does not replace:
- omnichannel routing, marketplace, workforce tools, reporting, compliance, and support
- omnichannel integrations
- large-scale deliverability
- AI resolution tuning
- enterprise routing and compliance

If those capabilities are essential, use Chatwoot instead of pretending the gap is solved.

why people still pay

People still pay for Zendesk because support software survives because missing or misrouting one customer message is expensive and every channel behaves differently. The recurring cost buys message delivery, webhooks, threading, identity, permissions, attachments, notifications, spam, search, uptime, and retention, not just the visible interface.
