A consolation build is possible, but the paid product's decisive value sits outside a solo rebuild. For Webex Meet, host basic private calls without reproducing enterprise media and telephony infrastructure. The hard boundary is global conferencing, devices, calling, security, compliance, and support, plus real-time media infrastructure and reliability.

# Webex Meet indie build

## Goal

Build the smallest trustworthy replacement for the core Webex Meet workflow for one developer or a tiny team.

## Scope

Host basic private video calls in modest rooms, issue signed room links, and keep recordings only when every participant is clearly informed, without reproducing enterprise media and telephony infrastructure.

## Quick start

1. Install the documented dependencies.
2. Copy `.env.example` to `.env`.
3. Run the development command chosen during implementation.
4. Complete the acceptance checks in `BUILD_PLAN.md`.

## Honest limits

This build deliberately does not replace:
- global conferencing, devices, calling, security, compliance, and support
- global low-latency media network
- dial-in and telephony
- large webinars
- transcription, support, and compliance

If those capabilities are essential, use Jitsi Meet instead of pretending the gap is solved.

why people still pay

People still pay for Webex Meet because video products survive because real-time media quality and global reliability are infrastructure businesses, not weekend interface projects. The recurring cost buys TURN capacity, codecs, browsers, packet loss, scaling, recording, consent, abuse, monitoring, and incident response, not just the visible interface.
