A consolation build is possible, but the paid product's decisive value sits outside a solo rebuild. For SmugMug, publish a self-hosted client gallery from user-owned photo storage. The hard boundary is image hosting, global delivery, print commerce, client proofing, and support, plus image pipeline quality, models, and workflow polish.

# SmugMug indie build

## Goal

Build the smallest trustworthy replacement for the core SmugMug workflow for one developer or a tiny team.

## Scope

Catalog local photos from user-owned storage, generate previews, apply non-destructive adjustments, and publish selected images to a self-hosted client gallery.

## Quick start

1. Install the documented dependencies.
2. Copy `.env.example` to `.env`.
3. Run the development command chosen during implementation.
4. Complete the acceptance checks in `BUILD_PLAN.md`.

## Honest limits

This build deliberately does not replace:
- image hosting, global delivery, print commerce, client proofing, and support
- proprietary raw-processing quality
- cloud sync and sharing
- large AI models
- camera and print ecosystem

If those capabilities are essential, use Immich instead of pretending the gap is solved.

why people still pay

People still pay for SmugMug because photographers pay because image quality, catalog safety, and fast handling of huge libraries matter more than cloning sliders. The recurring cost buys raw codecs, color management, metadata, previews, face models, GPU support, storage, backups, sync, and export fidelity, not just the visible interface.

questions
Vibecode SmugMug

Not really. SmugMug's value is not the code: Recheck price before merge. See the honest breakdown above.

How much does SmugMug cost?

SmugMug costs about $20/month (Direct, checked 2026-08-14), which is $240 per year.

What do I lose by replacing SmugMug?

Honestly: image hosting, global delivery, print commerce, client proofing, and support; proprietary raw-processing quality; cloud sync and sharing; large AI models; camera and print ecosystem. If any of those are load-bearing for you, keep paying.

Is there an open-source alternative to SmugMug?

Yes: Photoview (A fast gallery over an existing folder tree with RAW, EXIF, users, share links, and downloads; minimal branding controls, maximum ownership.) Lychee (Clean albums, passworded shares, metadata, and downloads from your own storage; no print lab, sales engine, or hand-holding.) Piwigo (A mature self-hosted gallery with private albums, users, themes, metadata, downloads, and a huge plugin ecosystem; you become the support desk.)
