NOT REALLY · don't bother

🪦 PlayHT shut down on December 31, 2025, after the team was acquihired by Meta. The verdict below is now a post-mortem.

price was $39/mobuild time closest consolation build: one sittingcategory 🔊 voice aireplaced by 0 people

A consolation build is possible, but the paid product's decisive value sits outside a solo rebuild. For PlayHT, run a local licensed TTS model and organize voiceover projects. The hard boundary is proprietary voices, real-time api, cloning workflow, compute, and commercial rights, plus models, compute, rights, and safety operations.

# PlayHT indie build

## Goal

Build the smallest trustworthy replacement for the core PlayHT workflow for one developer or a tiny team.

## Scope

Run a local licensed TTS model, turn user-authored text into clearly labeled synthetic voiceovers, organize projects, and retain provenance for every output.

## Quick start

1. Install the documented dependencies.
2. Copy `.env.example` to `.env`.
3. Run the development command chosen during implementation.
4. Complete the acceptance checks in `BUILD_PLAN.md`.

## Honest limits

This build deliberately does not replace:
- proprietary voices, real-time API, cloning workflow, compute, and commercial rights
- frontier voice or avatar model
- licensed voice catalog
- real-time rendering fleet
- moderation, consent verification, and enterprise rights

If those capabilities are essential, use Piper instead of pretending the gap is solved.

why people still pay

People paid for PlayHT because customers paid for output quality, production speed, licensed voices, consent workflows, and a provider that carried the operational risk. The recurring cost bought model licensing, consent records, impersonation risk, watermarking, GPU queues, media storage, abuse response, and rapid model changes, not just the visible interface.

questions
Vibecode PlayHT

Not really. PlayHT's value is not the code: Recheck price before merge. See the honest breakdown above.

How much does PlayHT cost?

Nothing anymore: PlayHT shut down on December 31, 2025, after the team was acquihired by Meta. Before that it ran about $39/month.

What do I lose by replacing PlayHT?

Honestly: proprietary voices, real-time API, cloning workflow, compute, and commercial rights; frontier voice or avatar model; licensed voice catalog; real-time rendering fleet; moderation, consent verification, and enterprise rights. Since the product is gone, these gaps are now everyone's problem.

Is there an open-source alternative to PlayHT?

Yes: Voicebox (A local voice studio with cloning, reusable profiles, long-form generation and a multi-track editor.) TTS WebUI (Dozens of local TTS and cloning engines behind one Windows installer and a saved-audio library.) The prompt is for when you want it exactly your way.
