The core loop is buildable, but a dependable replacement becomes a real weekend or multi-day project. For Matter, save articles and newsletters into a clean reading queue with highlights and notes. The hard boundary is email ingestion, mobile apps, text-to-speech, sync, and polished capture, plus capture polish, sync, and content partnerships.

# Matter indie build

## Goal

Build the smallest trustworthy replacement for the core Matter workflow for one developer or a tiny team.

## Scope

Save permitted articles, newsletters, and feeds into a clean reading queue, extract readable text, add highlights and notes, tag and search the archive, and export it in open formats.

## Quick start

1. Install the documented dependencies.
2. Copy `.env.example` to `.env`.
3. Run the development command chosen during implementation.
4. Complete the acceptance checks in `BUILD_PLAN.md`.

## Honest limits

This build deliberately does not replace:
- email ingestion, mobile apps, text-to-speech, sync, and polished capture
- publisher bypasses
- cross-device mobile capture
- high-quality recommendation graph
- licensed full-text feeds

If those capabilities are essential, use FreshRSS instead of pretending the gap is solved.

why people still pay

People still pay for Matter because people pay when capture works everywhere, reading state syncs instantly, and the archive remains clean without constant parser repairs. The recurring cost buys feed quirks, parsing, paywalls, canonical URLs, deduplication, images, search, sync, browser extensions, and publisher changes, not just the visible interface.

questions
Vibecode Matter

Kinda. The core of Matter is buildable in a weekend with the prompt on this page, but there are real gaps: email ingestion, mobile apps, text-to-speech, sync, and polished capture, publisher bypasses. Read the honest list above before committing.

How much does Matter cost?

Matter costs about $7.99/month (Matter Premium, checked 2026-08-13), which is $95.88 per year.

What do I lose by replacing Matter?

Honestly: email ingestion, mobile apps, text-to-speech, sync, and polished capture; publisher bypasses; cross-device mobile capture; high-quality recommendation graph; licensed full-text feeds. If any of those are load-bearing for you, keep paying.

Is there an open-source alternative to Matter?

Yes: FreshRSS (Mature open-source RSS reader with feeds, filters, and self-hosting support.). Using prior art is also vibecoding; the prompt is for when you want it exactly your way.
