A consolation build is possible, but the paid product's decisive value sits outside a solo rebuild. For Google One, back up selected personal files and photos to a user-owned storage target. The hard boundary is google account integration, photos, device backup, family sharing, and global infrastructure, plus reliability, durability, and cross-device sync.

# Google One indie build

## Goal

Build the smallest trustworthy replacement for the core Google One workflow for one developer or a tiny team.

## Scope

Back up selected personal folders and photos, encrypt files client-side, track versions, and restore them from user-owned object storage.

## Quick start

1. Install the documented dependencies.
2. Copy `.env.example` to `.env`.
3. Run the development command chosen during implementation.
4. Complete the acceptance checks in `BUILD_PLAN.md`.

## Honest limits

This build deliberately does not replace:
- Google account integration, Photos, device backup, family sharing, and global infrastructure
- global sync network
- battle-tested conflict resolution
- ransomware recovery guarantees
- mobile clients and support

If those capabilities are essential, use Nextcloud instead of pretending the gap is solved.

why people still pay

People still pay for Google One because storage subscriptions sell confidence that files will still exist after a lost device, bad sync, or provider incident. The recurring cost buys chunking, encryption, conflict detection, versions, garbage collection, bandwidth, restore drills, monitoring, billing, and disaster recovery, not just the visible interface.
