A consolation build is possible, but the paid product's decisive value sits outside a solo rebuild. For Captions, caption and reframe user-owned short videos with local models. The hard boundary is proprietary editing models, mobile capture, avatars, cloud rendering, and creator workflow, plus models, compute, rights, and safety operations.

# Captions indie build

## Goal

Build the smallest trustworthy replacement for the core Captions workflow for one developer or a tiny team.

## Scope

Caption and reframe user-owned short videos using a local model, label any synthetic media clearly, and retain provenance for every output.

## Quick start

1. Install the documented dependencies.
2. Copy `.env.example` to `.env`.
3. Run the development command chosen during implementation.
4. Complete the acceptance checks in `BUILD_PLAN.md`.

## Honest limits

This build deliberately does not replace:
- proprietary editing models, mobile capture, avatars, cloud rendering, and creator workflow
- frontier voice or avatar model
- licensed voice catalog
- real-time rendering fleet
- moderation, consent verification, and enterprise rights

If those capabilities are essential, use Piper instead of pretending the gap is solved.

why people still pay

People still pay for Captions because customers pay for output quality, production speed, licensed voices, consent workflows, and a provider that carries the operational risk. The recurring cost buys model licensing, consent records, impersonation risk, watermarking, GPU queues, media storage, abuse response, and rapid model changes, not just the visible interface.

questions
Vibecode Captions

Not really. Captions's value is not the code: Recheck price before merge. See the honest breakdown above.

How much does Captions cost?

Captions costs about $24.99/month (Max, checked 2026-08-12), which is $299.88 per year.

What do I lose by replacing Captions?

Honestly: proprietary editing models, mobile capture, avatars, cloud rendering, and creator workflow; frontier voice or avatar model; licensed voice catalog; real-time rendering fleet; moderation, consent verification, and enterprise rights. If any of those are load-bearing for you, keep paying.

Is there an open-source alternative to Captions?

Yes: Piper (Active community continuation of the fast local Piper text-to-speech engine.). Using prior art is also vibecoding; the prompt is for when you want it exactly your way.
